Garment Steamer Buying Guide
Buying a garment steamer is an important decision for a clothes retailer or a garment factory. There are very few options available for buying a steamer and most of them are suitable for a home user. A commercial user needs a steamer which is robustly built, sturdy and yet easy to operate. They also look for a model that can handle a variety of fabrics and allows continuous use for a longer period without the need for frequent refilling.
A retailer or a factory owner should look for the following aspects while judging the quality and suitability of a steamer iron.
Built and construction: A sturdy steamer should ideally have a metal body, but a metal body machine will be expensive as well as heavy. The cheaper alternative is plastic or polycarbonate body which is widely used in making a steamer. Commercial steamers have a large wheel for easy movement on the shop floor.
Tank Capacity: Practically speaking a liter of water will produce steam for a half hour during normal uses. A factory or a retail shop needs to iron lots of garment so a large water tank is an essential feature to look for in a steamer iron.
The smaller or portable steam irons are suitable for home or travel use. They have a single piece design with a built in water tank that typically needs refill every 10 to 15 minutes. The commercial models have a separate water tank with a capacity ranging over 2 liters or more. Most of the commercial steamers have a safety mechanism that prevents operation of iron if the water tank is dry. Dry running of steamer may permanently damage your iron and may create a fire hazard is other safety features (fuse) is not present. It is important to check for tank capacity as well as a safety feature.
Temperature Control: From delicate silk dress to expensive woolen suit, a retail store needs to constantly steam a wide range of garments made with a variety of fabrics. The smaller home steamers just do not have any feature to handle it, as most of them have a push button that turns on or off steam flow. The commercial models have steam producing at different temperature setting and wattage. As a rule of thumb the higher the wattage, steam production will be more.
Nozzle size: The larger nozzle size will cover a greater garment area and dispense steam more evenly while ironing a garment. Smaller non commercial units have a small pointed nozzle while commercial ones usually have a wide, detachable nozzle.
Control panel: Does your steamer has a manual rotary type temperature setting dial or it offers the comfort of a digital, electronic operations. Does it offer large readout showing temperature or wattage of the operations? Most modern steamers offer a digital readout whereas older or cheaper steamers would come with a manual dial type controller. Portable home models may not offer anything except a power button.
Accessories: A good garment steamer should come with useful accessories such as chrome rod with cloth hanger, lint remover and fabric brush. Most of the smaller home use models do not offer such accessories.
